Romania has such an entity in the field of Natural Sciences, namely the International Center for Advanced Training and Research in Physics - CIFRA, located in the city of Măgurele, Ilfov County.
CIFRA (acronym from the French name: Centre International de Formation et de Recherche Avancées en Physique) was established in 2015, based on an agreement between the Government of Romania and UNESCO, as a subsidiary with legal personality of the National Institute of Research - Development for Materials Physics.
CIFRA objectives include:
- Providing advanced training and research opportunities for scientists from Central and Eastern European countries and developing countries, especially in Africa;
- Carrying out and coordinating advanced research studies in the field of physics and related interdisciplinary fields;
- Providing expertise to decision makers;
- Carry out promotional activities that provide an international forum for discussion and encourage the formation of regional collaboration networks between scientists from different countries.
The governing bodies of CIFRA are represented by an international Board and the Board of Directors of the Research and Development Institute for Materials Physics. The director of the institution is Prof. Dr. Sabin Stoica.
CIFRA's activities are carried out through two departments: the research department (conducting research projects on niche and interdisciplinary topics) and the training department (organizing training courses and dissemination activities).
Project in progress:
- Properties of neutrinos resulting from the study of rare decays at low and high energy;
- Dissipative processes in lasers with singular quantum dots;
- Extensive use of experience in space and security activities;
- Theoretical study of double beta decay - bilateral project with the Unified Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Moscow region, Russia;
- Erasmus - PULSE: Professionalism and international openness to experimental science licenses in West Africa.
Projects in perspective
TRROL (TRaining in Romanian Laboratories) is a project that aims to offer young students and researchers from Eastern and South-Eastern European countries, as well as from developing countries, training and research opportunities in Romania. The project aims to bridge the gap between the knowledge acquired in undergraduate studies and those needed to address specific research topics in physics and related fields, through courses and internships in Romanian laboratories. It also aims to promote the exchange of scientific data on various research topics within the networks developed between educational and research institutions in Romania and similar ones abroad.
TRROL will build on the existing competitive research infrastructure on the Măgurele Platform, but also in other research centers in Romania, and will address an important aspect of CIFRA's mission, namely to improve scientific expertise in developing countries and to provide support for sustainability in basic and applied research, to help them progress. On the other hand, it will also contribute to the capitalization of the research infrastructure in Romania, by increasing the visibility and contribution to the transfer of knowledge inside and outside the country. This project will be carried out in collaboration with the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, a UNESCO category 1 institute.
Dissemination activities
“Pontecorvo” International School of Neutral Physics, held on September 1-10, 2019, in Sinaia, jointly organized with the Unified Institute for Nuclear Research (IUCN) in Dubna, Russia, Czech Technical University in Prague, Charles University in Prague, University Comenius in Bratislava and the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Krakow.
