Between 7–10 May 2025, the 9th Informal Meeting of the Network of European National Commissions for UNESCO took place in Dublin, Ireland, organized by the Irish Ministry of Education in partnership with the Irish National Commission for UNESCO.
The event brought together Secretaries-General and representatives of National Commissions for UNESCO from the Europe and North America region, with the main objectives of strengthening cooperation among National Commissions, preparing for the UNESCO General Conference to be held in November 2025 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and presenting national initiatives carried out this year under UNESCO’s thematic areas.
Romania was represented by the Secretary-General of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO, Mrs. Ligia Deca, who actively contributed to all working sessions. Mrs. Deca's messages addressed current topics on UNESCO's agenda, such as: education for art and culture, the role of National Commissions in supporting multilateral cooperation, the need to create synergies between education, science, and culture, the importance of combating disinformation and manipulation through educational and scientific tools, and the impact of artificial intelligence on media and social networks.
Mrs. Ligia Deca was appointed rapporteur of the session dedicated to innovative cooperation among National Commissions, during which proposals were made regarding job shadowing exchanges between commission staff, specialization of staff on specific themes, the organization of regional workshops, and the use of artificial intelligence for the historical documentation of UNESCO-related topics.
Additionally, during the discussions, it was agreed to strengthen cooperation between Romania, Germany, and Austria, particularly in the fields of peace education, sustainable development, and cultural cooperation. Romania also highlighted its active contribution to the international Action Research project.
The next edition of the meeting will be organized by Germany in 2026.
