Celebrating and drawing attention to personalities, works or events that have contributed to the mutual enrichment of cultures helps to promote international understanding, closer relations among peoples and peace. UNESCO therefore participates since 1952 in the commemorations of historic events and in the anniversaries of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States and Associate Members, in order to give them worldwide significance.

The anniversaries of 2022 - 2023 nominated or supported by Romania, with which UNESCO is associated are the following:

  • 300th anniversary of the birth of Paisius of Hilendar, historian (1722-1773) (Bulgaria, with the support of Romania, Russian Federation and Slovenia)

  • 200th anniversary of János Bolyai’s letter about the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry (1823) (Hungary, with the support of Romania and Russian Federation)

  • 100th anniversary of the birth of Aco Šopov, poet (1923-1982) (North Macedonia, with the support of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Tunisia)

  • 200th anniversary of the birth of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, scientist (1822-1882) (Poland, with the support of Austria, Romania and Ukraine)

  • 100th anniversary of the birth of Liviu Ciulei, theatre and film director (1923-2011) (Romania, with the support of France, Republic of Moldova and Serbia)

  • 50th anniversary of the death of Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu, chemical engineer (1877-1973) (Romania, with the support of Germany and Montenegro)
