“Romanian Sculptors’ Month” 2026
Article published on 16-02-2026From 19 February to 19 March 2026, the city of Iași will host the sixth edition of the project “Romanian Sculptors’ Month”, organised by the Iași National Athenaeum with the support of the Iași City Hall and under the patronage of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO — a recognition that highlights its contribution to promoting contemporary artistic creation, enhancing cultural heritage, and strengthening cultural dialogue in the spirit of UNESCO’s values.
The 2026 edition is dedicated to celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Constantin Brâncuși, a major figure of global artistic modernity. The programme brings together a wide range of exhibitions, artistic interventions in public space, and related events, shaping Iași into a genuine cultural laboratory and a meeting point between tradition, experimentation, and new directions in contemporary sculpture.
Over the course of one month, the city will host 45 exhibitions and cultural events, transforming urban and institutional spaces into an open museum accessible to the public. Monumental sculptures will be displayed along the main pedestrian areas and in emblematic venues such as the Palace of Culture, Iași City Hall, Casa Muzeelor, the Metropolitan Museum, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University, and Iași International Airport. Invited artists include Mircea Roman, Aurel Vlad, Marian Zidaru and Mircea Cantor, alongside representatives of the new generation of sculptors.
The central exhibition at the Palace of Culture is dedicated to Vasile Gorduz, while the Union Museum hosts curated projects highlighting prominent names in contemporary Romanian sculpture. The programme also features book launches, guided tours, and curatorial interventions designed to foster dialogue between artists and audiences, reinforcing the educational dimension of the initiative.
The official opening of LSR 2026 will take place on 18 February at the International Centre for Contemporary Art – Baia Turcească, with the launch of a new volume by researcher Doina Lemny, a Brâncuși specialist at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The anniversary moment marking 150 years since the birth of Constantin Brâncuși will be celebrated during the LSR 2026 Gala on 19 February, bringing together leading national and international cultural figures and reaffirming the relevance of Brâncuși’s legacy for the contemporary art scene.
The project’s national and regional expansion includes exhibitions and events in Târgu Jiu, Constanța, Alba Iulia, Bârlad and Chișinău, contributing to strengthened cultural cooperation and to the promotion of Romanian sculpture within the European cultural space.
Through the scale of its programme and its extensive institutional partnerships, “Romanian Sculptors’ Month” stands as a platform for artistic dialogue, cultural and artistic education, and institutional cooperation. The initiative supports broader public access to culture and promotes the diversity of contemporary artistic expressions, reflecting UNESCO’s vision on the role of education through culture and the arts in fostering inclusive and creative societies, while highlighting artistic heritage as a resource for knowledge, reflection, and civic participation.
