The National Commission of Romania for UNESCO is organizing in Bucharest, August 23-29, the „UNESCO Academy of Young Women – Fight against xenophobia, extremism and aggression”, a project aimed at promoting education as an essential tool for the creation of non-conflictual, inclusive societies, in which gender equality is respected.
The event, dedicated to both women and men, will bring together young people aged between 18 and 35, from Romania and other European countries, to discuss perspectives and solutions to combat discrimination and violence against women. The year 2017 was designated by the European Commission as the year dedicated to combating violence against women.
The Academy’s activities are structured in 3 modules.
The first training course, „Attitudes to Extremism and Violence,” will focus on how to create and encourage active attitudes and behaviors towards extremism and violence of any kind. This module will explore different ways through which partnerships and solidarity networks can be created, starting with the education of children and young people, in order to take an attitude in such circumstances. The course will also focus on valorising diversity and human cohesion.
The second module, „Accepting diversity”, will focus on intercultural education, starting from the idea that although we are in a time of rapid globalization of societies, there are still obstacles and cultural gaps between groups of people and, very often, differences that create conflicts and even aggression. Considering that Bucharest is, since 2015, a member of the Intercultural City Network implemented by the Council of Europe, this issue will be consistently debated by the young participants.
The third training course will focus on PR and organizational communication, being one of the main tools to facilitate an open dialogue to combat xenophobia, discrimination, violence or any kind of aggression.
